Carol T. McClarnonis Of Counsel to
Giller & Calhoun. She has 20 years of large law firm experience
providing ERISA and tax compliance advice to employers and plan
service providers. She has extensive experience representing
clients in controversies and compliance matters before the
Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Labor.
Carol’s
experience covers the full range of retirement plans for both
public and private employers, including defined benefit and
money purchase pension plans, profit-sharing and 401(k) plans,
403(a) and 403(b) annuity plans, 457(b) and 457(f) plans,
non-qualified deferred compensation plans and individual
retirement plans. In addition to drafting and reviewing plan
documents, she has represented plan sponsors in obtaining
voluntary compliance relief, prohibited transaction exemptions
and private letter rulings in connection with their plans. She
also helps plan sponsors and fiduciaries to avoid controversies
by developing plan investment policies, fiduciary manuals and
internal compliance audits.
In addition,
Carol advises financial services companies on sophisticated
ERISA and tax issues arising in the retirement services and
insurance product operations of their businesses. In addition to
clients, both the general and professional media have consulted
her as an expert in the analysis and resolution of complicated
prohibited transaction issues. She routinely has worked with
securities counsel in the legal analysis of cutting edge annuity
and retirement plan product development.
Carol is
admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia. She
graduated cum laude from Indiana University School of Law –
Bloomington and was a managing editor of the Indiana Law
Journal. She has been active in the American Bar Association,
having served as Vice Chair of the Employee Benefits Committee
of the Tort and Insurance Practice Section. Carol serves on the
Board of Directors of Lubuto Library Project, Inc., a
Washington, DC based 501(c)(3) organization and is also a
Director and Corporate Secretary of Synergy Nonprofit, Inc., a
recently formed NGO based in Reston, VA.
